The Bullfighter's Son

The Lou Perez Podcast with Ááron Sepúlveda-Cué

's father was a bullfighter. But instead of following his dad's footsteps into the plaza de toros, Ááron took a more dangerous job: Economist.

I first came across Ááron’s story about his father on Father’s Day of this year. I was so blown away by this real-life mythical figure that not only did I reshare the thread on X, but I had to invite Ááron onto the podcast.

In between stories about his father the matador — each more epic than the last — Ááron and I talk about bullfighting, family, and culture.

Ááron’s father, Fernando Sepúlveda

During our conversation I’m reminded of the first and only bullfight I attended while studying abroad my junior year of college in Madrid, Spain. I was reading Ernest Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon at the time, which did not prepare me for the brutal art of bullfighting.

Shout-out to Sidney Franklin, the American matador.
